Souriat FM radio has launched 21 days of activism to promote the three concepts of the Security Council resolution 1325.  Souriat FM is an exciting and simple way to provide an interactive and free platform to discuss women's issues in Syria and the Arab world through specialized programs. The station depends upon social networking to reach its audience and has a number of professional reporters inside Syria who investigate and discuss women’s issues.

The 1325 UN Security Council resolution

The Security Council adopted resolution 1325 on women and peace and security on 31 October 2000. The resolution reaffirms the important role of women in the prevention and resolution of conflicts, peace negotiations, peace-building, peacekeeping, humanitarian response and in post-conflict reconstruction and stresses the importance of their equal participation and full involvement in all efforts for the maintenance and promotion of peace and security. Resolution 1325 urges all actors to increase the participation of women and incorporate gender perspectives in all United Nations peace and security efforts. It also calls on all parties to conflict to take special measures to protect women and girls from gender-based violence, particularly rape and other forms of sexual abuse, in situations of armed conflict. The resolution’s three conceptual frameworks are prevention, protection and participation.

Souriat FM Radio Campaign

The campaign started in the last week of February and will continue until April. Every last week of the three months will focus on one resolution concept, starting with prevention. As well as promoting the UN resolution, Souriat radio will raise awareness of women’s rights and violations, build positive changes in community attitudes in women’s rights and political participation. They seek to promote the role of women in peace and security and encourage the full participation of women in all kinds of conflict prevention and peace-building and post-conflict phase of economic recovery.

This campaign’s organiser Amera Malek participated in the WELDD workshop in Cairo in 2013 (public and political participation), and more recently attended WELDD meetings in Istanbul (peace and security), and Lahore (culturally justified violence against women), she also spread the word to other members of her organisation who later went on to benefit from WELDD trainings.
